Lando Norris Ends His 2026 Victory Drought

Lando Norris

came to the Hungaroring without a win this season, but left with one.

Starting from the front row, Norris was then overtaken by fellow McLaren driver Oscar Piastri within the opening laps. However rather than being compromised by the mistake, Norris was able to settle himself in and fight back to the front by way of a different pit-stop strategy. Clearly in clear air,, Norris was able to settle into a rhythm and ultimately build himself a large cushion.

Norris finished ahead of Verstappen by 15.080 seconds. Norris claimed his first GP win of the season, with McLaren securing their 14th win at the Hungaroring.

This was of great significance to Norris. It proved that the upgrades McLaren brought to the Hungaroring were actually benefiting the team.

Oscar Piastri’s Race Changes Dramatically

Piastri displayed what looked to be a fight between him and his teammate after leading away in lap one.

Things then went from bad to worse for him in the afternoon session. During a lap attempt around Wilson, Piastri was blocked by the Williams, and clipped the back of the car. Sainz received a five second penalty for the infringement.

Things went from bad to worse for Piastri, then. During the race, he retired due to a gearbox failure on his McLaren.

That DNF was one of the hottest topics of the afternoon as Piastri had been in a battle for the lead prior to his issue. His early retirement also meant that Norris was able to turn a tricky beginning to his race into an easy win.

Kimi Antonelli Produces Another Strong Drive

Kimi Antonelli kept up the pace in defending his championship, by coming back through the pack.

Starting eighth after a three-place grid penalty, Mercedes driver continually made progress through the race to eventually cross the line in third position. The result scored him a further 15 points in the championship and kept him ahead of his nearest rivals.

After the Hungarian GP, Antonelli was on 219 pts. 50 pts clear of Lewis Hamilton and 59 pts clear of teammate George Russell.

That means the championship still cruise control in Antonelli’s direction come the summer break.

George Russell Recovers From a Nightmare Start

Out of nowhere, Russell had some of the strangest moments before the bright yellow lights even went out.

Meanwhile his Mercedes went into anti-stall on the grid, dropping him from P2 all the way down to P20. The incident happened when the car surged forward after Russell pressed accelerator, which caused the car to regain on bit of speed causing him to push the pedal on, which tripped the anti stall system.

Started from the back of the grid and managed to fight his way through back into the points, crossing the finishing line in seventh.

He battled hard and looked to be coming back when he was unfortunately taken out. It had been a good comeback but the fact he was in the mix meant that the opportunity was lost and significantly more points were gained by Antonelli in the championship chase.

Hamilton and Verstappen Fight for Position

The tension between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen was yet another exciting race worth re-watching.

Magnussen, Raikkonen and Perez then battled hard with the two seasoned racers of Grosjean and Massa. After a good fight on the opening lap, Verstappen finally made an opportunistic move into Turn 1. That was a remarkable overtaking maneuver.

After Hamilton was subsequently passed by others while in the pits. Hamilton later lost out again after Ferrari called him in for a third pit stop under a virtual safety car. While giving him fresher tires, Hamilton was unable to recover the places lost to Antonelli and Verstappen.

Hamilton finished fifth on the road but picked up a five-second penalty for a pit lane speeding infringement, and was classified 5th.

The Piastri-Sainz clash might shed light on why the race leader fell by the wayside in the latter stages. Russell’s race from 20th spot is a testament to the hungaroring circuit and the Russell’s push back up the field offers a lesson or two in effective overtaking. De Grand Prix racing Hamilton-Verstappen provided some of the most interesting racing to come in the entire race.
